According to the Serial ATA Revison 3.0 Specification White Paper, SATA 3.0 will increase the number of NCQ instructions, in addition to increasing the bandwidth to 6Gb/s, including providing priority processing for real-time resources, mainly for video and audio/video transmission. In addition, SATA 3.0 will also prioritize resources that are being processed by the system, greatly improving the efficiency of the system.
In order to improve the battery life, SATA 3.0 adopts the new INCITS ATA8-ACS standard and is compatible with the old SATA devices. It not only further improves the transmission signal technology, but also significantly reduces the power consumption required for SATA transmission. In response to the current NB market demand for reduced product volume, SATA 3.0 offers a smaller LIF interface (Low Insertion Force Connector) than the general SATA interface, specifically targeting 1.8-inch storage devices, including the upcoming 7-mm thick optical drive only.

Hardware support
The SATA interface needs the support of hardware chips, such as the Intel ICH5(R), VIAVT8237, NVIDIA MCPRAID and SiS964. If the motherboard chip cannot directly support it, you need to select a third-party chip, the Silicon Image 3112A chip, which will generate some hardware performance. The difference is that drivers are also complicated.

4. SATA can be backward compatible with PATA devices by using a multipurpose chipset or a serial-to-parallel converter. Since SATA and PATA can use the same drive, there is no need to upgrade or make other changes to the operating system.
5. SATA does not require master and slave jumpers. The BIOS will number it in order of 1, 2, and 3. This depends on which SATA connector the drive is attached to (easy to install). The IDE hard disk needs to be set to jumper to set the master and slave.
6. SATA is also hot-swappable and can be used like a USB flash drive. The IDE hard disk does not support hot plugging.
