Customer Questions & Answers

QuestionWhat is the maximum current support for each normal USB port and smart charging port?

AnswerThe maximum current support for each USB data port is 0.9A, and for each smart charging port is 2.4 A.

Question: None of my 4 "Smart charging ports" support data connection. Am I doing something wrong?

Answer: The 4 charging ports (red) are charge only.

Question: Can you turn off the lights? How long is the cable?

Answer: If you are asking if you can turn out the lights independently of turning off the ports, then the answer is no. The lights must be on for each port in use. The cable is one meter (3.3 feet) and attached to the product. You cannot change the length, nor would you want to. A longer cable might compromise performance. As it is, this cable is longer than that of most hubs with a fixed cable.

Customer Feedback

"There are many USB 3.0 hubs available, and I chose this one because of my previous experience with the STC brand and because it is one of the least expensive hubs on the market. The availability of four power ports for recharging portable devices, along with a 48-watt power supply meant I could have seven data ports and four charging ports in the same space previously occupied by a dedicated charging station. The question, then, was whether it could provide data throughput comparable to that of other 7-port data hubs and whether it could charge my devices.

As a test, I connected a Western Digital 4 TB HDD, a Seagate 2 TB SSD, two USB 2.0 thumb drives, a Logitech wireless dongle, and a high-resolution DAC. The mix of USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices is important, as some hubs are known to have slower 3.0 performance when 2.0 devices are present. I also moved the various data connections around to test for uniformity. I tested data performance by simultaneously copying 6 GB files to each of the drives while listening to a DSD 128 recording and charging my iPhone and iPad. As a benchmark, I measured the copy speed of a 6GB file from the internal SSD of my iMac to an external LaCie 8 TB Thunderbolt 3 drive, which took 40 seconds.

What I found was that copy performance was unaffected by the use of multiple simultaneous file transfers, but that there was some variability depending on which port was used. The WD HDD was the fastest and, much to my surprise, offered comparable speed to the LaCie Thunderbolt drive. The Seagate SSD took about 50% longer with file transfers. To be certain that the slower transfer speed with the SSD wasn't caused by the Atolla hub, I plugged the drives directly into the iMac and found the same thing; hence the HDD simply outperformed the SSD. However, the speed of data transfer was less than half as fast when the HDD was plugged into the data port closest to the power ports, as opposed to the data port closest to the hub connection. It was unaffected by turning the other data ports on or off. Speed with the SSD, on the other hand, was uniform across all ports. I ended up downgrading my rating by one star because, in practice, I can arrange my connections based on port speed, but I shouldn't have to.

Although the DAC uses a USB 2.0 connection, any slow-downs at all would be expected to interrupt the music, but that didn't happen. Throughout the testing, the music playback was perfect. The Logitech wireless mouse did show occasional skips during the file transfers, but this occurred as well when using a Bluetooth connection, which had nothing to do with the hub. The speed of charging my iPhone and iPad was comparable to that of using any standard 2A USB charging port, but not as fast as with my dedicated 'intelligent' charger; however, given what is known about the adverse effects of rapid chargers on battery life, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Ideally, one would like to have 10 watts of power across all 11 ports, but that would require a 110-watt power supply, rather than the 48 watts supplied. There are hubs available with higher power ratings, but they tend to cost more than twice as much.

Overall I found the finish of the hub to be excellent and the appearance of the lights around each port was very nice. They make it easy to see which ports and on and which are turned off. The 1-meter data cable is longer than most. At its price, it's hard to find a better value in an 11-port USB 3.0 hub, but the variability in speed across the ports may be an issue for some."

"This is probably one of the simplest USB hubs I have ever purchased. It can connect to an outlet so it can charge anything that connects to USB. I use it next to my bed to charge my phone and my headphones. Great.."

"I have had this for a week and the hub works great. The lighting helps know which port is active. Every port worked just great. It would be nice if the lights had dim options. I like the lights but in the dark, they can be too bright. It would be nice to have an option to have a lower lighting option."
