It's used to connect the laptop or graphic card with DisplayPort output, the monitor with VGA input.It could not work in the opposite direction.

"My Dell laptop had a shaky VGA signal (it's a work hand-me-down, so no telling). So I tried this adapter to use the DisplayPort to connect to my old VGA-input only monitor, and it works great!
